Matsukaze and Murasame share a passionate but unfulfilled love for a man. Hundreds of years after their deaths, they return as ghosts to the salt hut where they spent their lives. Matsukaze has been staged in several productions since 2011; in the world premiere at the Monnaie in Brussels, directed by Sasha Waltz, Barbara Hannigan and Charlotte Hellekant took on the roles of the sisters Matsukaze and Murasame.
The upcoming performances in Munich with the Münchner Kammerorchester and the vocal ensemble VOCES Stuttgart will feature young soloists from the Opera Studio of the Bavarian State Opera. The production poses questions about the attachment and redemption of souls: What do we hold on to? What can set us free? And do we even want that? These facets of dependency are explored in a space designed by the internationally renowned artist Alicja Kwade, who invites the audience to move freely through this opera installation.
