At the centre of the album is the Serenade in D for large orchestra by Ethel Smyth (1858-1944), who composed her music, brimming with ingenuity, originality and passion, in an environment characterised by misogynistic reservations. By bringing previously underrepresented works more into focus, Ensemble Reflektor aims to contribute to the transformation of the musical canon.
The work will be combined with two commissioned compositions by Ying Wang and inti figgis-vizueta from the project SIEBEN LETZTE WORTE - KEIN ERLÖSER AM KREUZ developed in cooperation with PODIUM Esslingen. Ying Wang's work Freiheit ist der Atem der Kunst ('Freedom is the Breath of Art') takes its title from the response of an AI application that was asked about the relationship between freedom and art.
The album can be heard on all popular streaming platforms - on Spotify, the first movement of Ethel Smyth's Serenade immediately reached number 13 on the curated New in Classical playlist.
