Ella Rohwer was born in Cologne and received her first cello lessons at the age of five. She made her debut at the Kölner Philharmonie at the age of nine. In 2006, she became a junior student of H.C. Schweiker at the Cologne University of Music and Dance, where she began her studies in 2007. Ella Rohwer was also a permanent member of the Ensemble für Neue Musik NRW from 2005 to 2009. She deepened her interest in contemporary music during her studies and numerous performances with the Hochschulensemble 20/21, with whom she participated in recordings for Deutschlandfunk, among others.
Ella Rohwer has made a name for herself as a theatre musician in numerous productions at Schauspiel Köln, Theater Bonn and in independent theatre projects. Since 2011/12, she has accompanied productions as a musician and musical director and has worked with author and director David Schalko, among others. In 2012, Ella Rohwer passed her diploma examination with honours. She deepened her interest in contemporary music in the 2014/15 season as a scholarship holder of the International Ensemble Modern Academy in Frankfurt. She was awarded a Master’s degree in New Music in 2015.
Ella Rohwer also passes on her passion for music through her teaching. As a lecturer for contemporary music, she has travelled to Montepulciano and the renowned European Academy of Music and Performing Arts. She also specialises in free improvisation in contemporary and pop music. She also regularly gives workshops and teaches in this area. Since 2020, Ella Rohwer has been a lecturer for new music and improvisation at the HfMT Cologne (Wuppertal). She has also performed on stage with renowned artists and has recorded studio tracks for many well-known musicians (including Max Herre, Basta Ace, Michael Bublé, Bosse, Robbie Williams, Tonbandgerät, Cats on Trees, Re:loom, Klima, Robert Redweik, Kasalla). She received her first gold disc in 2014 for her contribution to the album ‘Kraniche’ by Bosse.
