On 5 March 2025, the jury announced the winners of this year's Premio Abbiati. The JACK Quartet will be awarded in the ensemble category, while Samir Odeh-Tamimi will receive the Premio Abbiati in the ‘Novità per l'Italia’ category for the world premiere of his composition Roaïkron at the Biennale Musica in Venice in autumn 2024.
According to the jury, the JACK Quartet receives the prize "for the concert at the Spoleto Festival, the only Italian stop, where the quartet of acclaimed young musicians Christopher Otto and Austin Wulliman (violin), John Richards (viola) and Jay Campbell (cello) performed American works by Ruth Crawford Seeger, Gabriella Smith, Amy Williams (Tangled Madrigal as Italian premiere) and George Lewis with brilliant interpretation, virtuosity, imagination, and incisiveness."
Samir Odeh-Tamimi's Roaïkron, performed at the Biennale di Venezia by the Christian Benning Percussion Group, was described by the jury as "emblematic of the forceful and dramatic musical language of the Palestinian composer, who is able to translate into sound the matter that forms the rings of Saturn, with rhythmic materials in various colors and primitive strength."
The Premio della critica musicale ‘Franco Abbiati’ has been awarded annually in various categories by the Associazione Nazionale Critici Musicali since 1980/81. It was named after the music critic Franco Abbiati (1898-1981). The award ceremonies take place in collaboration with the city council of Bergamo at the Teatro Donizetti and other venues. The prize has been under the patronage of the President of the Italian Republic since 2008.
