The Académie Charles Cros has honoured the recording of Hèctor Parra's opera, which caused a sensation at its premiere, as the best recording of 2024 in the field of contemporary music. For almost three hours, the work immerses its audience in the ambivalence of the main character, SS officer Maximilian Aue, and the atrocities in which he was involved. At the request of Jonathan Littel, author of the novel on which it is based, the visual presentation of his Bienveillantes was reserved exclusively for live performance. The result is, instead of a DVD production, an audio version of the performance of the opera in Ghent, which deprives us of Calixto Bieito's staging, but nevertheless projects its own powerful images.
