In addition to Johannes Maria Staud's composition, the programme includes Benjamin Britten's Serenade op. 31 for tenor, horn and string orchestra (soloists: Julian Prégardien and Franz Draxinger), another world premiere by Mirela Ivičević and Arnold Schönberg's Verklärte Nacht in the Bodenseefestival concert at the Konzerthaus Ravensburg.
On 22 May, the same programme can be heard at the Prinzregententheater in Munich. On 25 May, the orchestra will perform at the Mozartfest in Würzburg.
Johannes Maria Staud says of his work, commissioned by the Munich Chamber Orchestra with kind support by Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung, Klangspuren Schwaz and Les Musicales de Quiberon: "Sudden, spiky melodic outbursts, stubborn soloistic interjections, and thorny microtonal passages that build up to eruptive, suction-like tutti sound effects are introduced. But also, bruitistic and hazy musical landscapes, which deliberately play with the element of surprise, are presented. Diverse, spiky soundscapes emerge, yet they follow a secret overarching dramaturgy. (...) Stachel (Thorn), my second commissioned work after Terra Pinguis (for Arthur) for the incomparable Munich Chamber Orchestra, is also my first piece for a pure string orchestra. This work is dedicated with deep affection to this wonderful ensemble."
