"Tchaikovsky has never been more modern and the conductor Valentin Uryupin lives this out consistently and quite stunningly", wrote the Süddeutsche Zeitung in 2022 about Valentin Uryupin's conducting of the celebrated production of Tchaikovsky's opera The Sorceress in Frankfurt.
Now Italian audiences can also enjoy Valentin Uryupin's interpretation of a Tchaikovsky opera: In April, he will conduct The Queen of Spades at the Teatro Regio Torino - the opera that Tchaikovsky considered to be his best work. Following his brilliant debut at the Teatro Regio in 2023 with Rimsky-Korsakov's The Tsar's Bride, Valentin Uryupin will now return to the theatre.
The opera will be performed in a production by Deutsche Oper Berlin which premiered last year. It was originally conceived shortly before the pandemic by Graham Vick, who tragically died in 2021 as a result of a Covid infection. His concept was later developed further by English director Sam Brown.
