Pierre Boulez's composition, premiered in Donaueschingen in 1981, is considered a pioneering example of the combination of traditional acoustic instruments with digitally manipulated live sounds and is, at the same time, overwhelming spatial music. The rarely performed work requires a special spatial arrangement in which six solo instruments and the loudspeakers of the live electronics are placed in the audience, while a large instrumental ensemble plays in the centre of the room.
Following the liturgical model of the responsory, Boulez, composed alternating dialogue of various kinds: between ensemble and solo instruments, between instrumental families, instrumental groups and individual instruments in the ensemble, between the instruments of the solo group, between transformed and untransformed sound.
In addition to Répons, James Tenney's 1994 work In a Large, Open Space will also be performed. The piece is based on an overtone sound that is held for as long as possible and that unfolds its evocative effect through active listening, while the musicians and listeners can move freely in the space.
Bas Wiegers will conduct the two impressive works in the Muziekgebouw Amsterdam (24 April), the Floraliënhal in Ghent (26 April), de Doelen in Rotterdam (27 April) and de Singel Antwerp (29 April).
