"He learned
to make music democratically at an early age, and he also appreciates
the cultivated discourse. From this, as well as from his in-depth
reading of the musical text, he gains his polished interpretations,
which lead the listener to the essence of the respective work and even a
bit further," the jury's statement said.
Special mention was made of his conducting of Philipp Glass' music theater Einstein on the Beach
in Geneva and the Boris Godunov project at the Stuttgart State Opera,
in which Modest Mussorgsky's opera was combined with six miniature
dramas by the composer Sergei Nevsky. The title "Conductor of the Year 2020"
was awarded twice, with Kirill Petrenko being the other
conductor to receive the honour.
