Humming and Silence

With his work Api-danza macabra, Vito Žuraj addresses the explosive topic of bee mortality. The WDR Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Cristian Măcelaru, premiered the commissioned composition this summer.

Not only ecologically is the death of bees a dramatic loss, states the introduction to the work: "It is also an acoustic loss," says Vito Žuraj. "It has become silent in the flowering meadows. Especially the bees are missing with their different sounds, when they drink nectar very quietly or when they fly around. But also the bumblebee - the five-stringed double bass among insects. Agile strings, but also buzzing brass mouthpieces and various percussion instruments are very suitable to reflect this variety of sounds."
