Together with acclaimed harpsichordist Francesco Corti, Ilya Gringolts has recorded Bach's Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord Nos. 1-6, BWV 1014-1019. These are considered the first violin sonatas in music history in which the keyboard instrument breaks out of its purely accompanying role in the basso continuo and becomes an equal partner to the violin.
The recording is the violinist's first release on the Arcana label, which has signed him exclusively. The recording is complemented by Tertia defi ciens, a work commissioned especially for this album and written by composer and Baroque violinist Andrew McIntosh. It explores an early Baroque tuning system, ‘quarter-comma meantone temperament,’ which fell out of fashion with the advent of the so-called ‘equal temperament’ made famous by Bach.
