In Liza Lim’s new work, Tongue of the Land, Marco Blaauw plays a Celtic wind instrument that is more than 2,000 years old: the carnyx is an Iron Age bronze trumpet almost two metres long, which was presumably used particularly during military campaigns.
Mark Andres’s clarinet concerto über, written for Jörg Widmann and the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg, was premiered in 2015 at the Donaueschingen Music Festival and awarded the Orchestra Prize.
Finally, John Adams’ Doctor Atomic Symphony was conceived as a distillation of his opera about J. Robert Oppenheimer and the first atomic bomb test in New Mexico.
