In 1975, Les Percussions de Strasbourg premiered Karlheinz Stockhausen's scenic composition Musik im Bauch. At the Berlin festival Maerz Musik, the ensemble presented the work in a visually and musically impressive new production by Simon Steen-Andersen.

Karlheinz Stockhausen included a larger-than-life-size puppet of a bird man, automatically shifting between musicians, a glockenspiel, sound plates, a humming top and, above all, three music boxes in his score, which contains more stage directions than music in the usual context. For Musik im Bauch, the composer had a set of twelve music boxes built with his Tierkreis melodies, which were composed for this purpose and can also be performed independently; the random selection of three of these boxes determines the respective performance of Musik im Bauch.
