In April, the world premiere with the SWR Symphony Orchestra under Tito Ceccherini at the Schwetzingen SWR Festival was met with enthusiasm: ‘What you got to see and, above all, hear there is nothing less than a crazy masterpiece,’ wrote the daily newspaper Die Rheinpfalz, and the theatre magazine Die Deutsche Bühne found: ‘You absolutely want to hear this music again, which is why the premiere audience applauded exuberantly and lavishly.’
There is now plenty of opportunity to hear Der Doppelgänger again (or for the first time) at the Lucerne Theatre: the Swiss premiere at the Lucerne Festival on 7 September will be followed by five more performances with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra under Tito Ceccherini until January 2025.
For the work based on the novel of the same name by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Ukrainian author Katya Petrovskaya has transformed the material into an opera libretto. The co-production of the Schwetzingen SWR Festival and the Lucerne Theatre was stage directed by David Hermann.
Tito Ceccherini had already premiered a work by Lucia Ronchetti in 2021: Inferno was presented at Oper Frankfurt.
