Congratulations to Ilya Gringolts: his CD il labirinto armonico with violin concertos by Pietro Locatelli was awarded a Diapason d'or. "The Russian violinist's boldness no longer needs to prove itself, nor does his technical mastery, his overflowing inspiration," reads the CD review accompanying the award.
The recording, which was released at the beginning of the year, had already enthused critics weeks prior: "From the opening track onwards, elegant playing launches a programme rich in charm from Ilya Gringolts and the Finnish Baroque Orchestra, all on sparkling form", justifies Gramophone magazine its Editor's Choice, and from Fono Forum: "Ilya Gringolts dances on this tightrope with striking ease (...) and shapes with intimate cantabile." The Süddeutsche Zeitung writes: "With Gringolts, these extreme acrobatics seem something like an oblivious tightrope walk of pleasure in the extremes and joy in the most exalted violin playing - fantastic!!"
Locatelli's L'Arte del violino gave new impetus to the solo concerto genre in 1733. This fresh wind is also noticeable in Ilya Gringolts' recently released recording with the Finnish Baroque Orchestra.
New music for the 18th century
