Hermann Hesse's famous poem Im Nebel inspired Toshio Hosokawa to write his trumpet concerto, premiered in 2013 by Jeroen Berwaerts with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra under Jun Märkl. The trumpet stands for man, the orchestra symbolises nature and the mystery that surrounds it. Following the world premiere, Jeroen Berwaerts performed Im Nebel with various orchestras around the world with great success.
In addition to this work, Vol. 4 of Toshio Hosokawa's orchestral works released by Naxos and recorded with the Residentie Orkest under Jun Märkl includes the violin concerto Genesis (soloist: Paul Huang) and two further compositions for orchestra: the short Sakura from 2021 and Uzu, which was awarded the Otaka Prize for the best Japanese composition of the year in 2019.
Another CD with the Residentie Orkest performing of Toshio Hosokawa's works is already being planned: the one-act melodrama Futari Shizuka (The Maiden from the Sea) and the flute concerto Ceremony with soloist Mario Caroli will be released next.
