Polyphonic Amsterdam: Under the direction of Bas Wiegers, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra celebrates the city's 750th anniversary with three remarkable concerts from 6 to 8 March.

The three concerts in the Concertgebouw make reference to Amsterdam's history in a variety of ways. The programme kicks off on Thursday with arias, cabaret songs, orchestral works and a world premiere: Dutch composer Theo Verbey, who died in 2019, evokes a summer evening in the colourful Amsterdam-Oost district in his Notturno for oboe (soloist: Ivan Podyomov) and orchestra. Soprano Tania Kross then sings half a century old Amsterdam cabaret songs as well as arias from Randal Coren's Katibu di shon, the first opera in the Creole language Papiamentu. Greek-born composer Calliope Tsoupaki has lived in Amsterdam for over 35 years. The memory of her arrival in the city inspired her to write the new work Another Day. The programme concludes with Silvestre Revualta's composition Cuauhnáhuac, which is reminiscent of pre-colonial Mexican landscapes and cultures.
