The Ensemble Synergy Vocals will give the Portuguese premiere of a new work by the legendary Steve Reich, co-commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, BBC Radio 3, Casa da Música, Istanbul Music Festival, Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, Queen Silvia Concert Hall, O/Modernt, Radio France and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Jacob's Ladder is inspired by a biblical sentence from Genesis: ‘He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.’
The concert opens the 25th anniversary year of the Remix Ensemble, which has achieved international recognition with unusual and innovative projects under the direction of Peter Rundel.
In an extensive interview with the Portuguese daily newspaper Público in December, Peter Rundel spoke about his more than 20 years of collaboration with the ensemble and about prospects for the future. ‘Looking back and in all modesty, I have to say that what we have achieved is amazing,’ he said. ‘It was a great opportunity to have this focus on contemporary music for the entire Casa da Música, to have a prominent composer and also a young composer as a guest every year. The role that contemporary music has played at Casa da Música is fantastic.’
On the occasion of the ensemble's 15th anniversary back in 2015, Peter Rundel talked about his work with the Remix Ensemble and its beginnings in Porto in our magazine.
