For six performances, the Drill Hall of the Park Avenue Armory in New York will become the venue for an immersive sound experience. Fifty pianos and the Klangforum Wien, conducted by Bas Wiegers, will unleash a microtonal universe with 11,000 strings for 50 pianos distributed throughout the space in hundredths of a tone intervals and a chamber orchestra by Georg Friedrich Haas.
The composition was commissioned by the Busoni-Mahler Foundation and supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. The world premiere took place in Bolzano in 2023; since then, the work has also been performed in Vienna, Prague, Amsterdam, Düsseldorf and Hanover.
Georg Friedrich Haas is a professor at Columbia University in New York, where the work will receive its American premiere on 30 September under the baton of Bas Wiegers and can be heard on five further evenings.
