Since its foundation in 1981, the festival in Lockenhaus, Burgenland/Austria, has become a legendary venue for chamber music, and it is once again bringing together a line-up of excellent musical personalities this year. In addition to festival founder Gidon Kremer and artistic director Nicolas Altstaedt, these include violinist Vilde Frang, violist Lawrence Power, pianists András Schiff and Daniel Heide and oboist Heinz Holliger.
In addition to the impressive knight's castle, the palace and the beautiful baroque church in Lockenhaus, the Kőszeg Synagogue, 16 kilometres away in western Hungary, is now also a venue for the festival.
For the Castalian String Quartet, the festival summer then continues with a trip to Finland: at the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival from 18 to 22 July, the musicians will perform six concerts with works by Beethoven, Schubert, Haydn, Bartók and Wynton Marsalis, among others.
