The semi-scenic work for Noh voice, baritone and ensemble links the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC AR6) with Japanese poetry from the 9th to the 12th centuries by Saigyô, Prince Shiki, Ariwara no Narihira, Izumi Kyoka, Ki no Tsurayuki and Matsuo Bashō.
By juxtaposing dramatically different textual levels in terms of their origins and objectives, Fabián Panisello illuminates the transcendent relationship between humanity and life on the planet, whilst at the same time urgently highlighting the necessity of effective climate protection. Change was commissioned by the Studio for Electroacoustic Music at the Berlin Academy of Arts, with the kind support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation
The world premiere, featuring Ryoko Aoki, baritone Andreas Jankowitsch and the PluralEnsemble, is part of a programme of works dedicated to poetic spirituality and the sanctity of nature: Johann Sebastian Bach’s Das Alte Jahr vergangen ist and the Ricercar a 6 from his Musical Offering are presented in transcriptions and reinterpretations by Anton Webern, György Kurtág and Vladimir Tarnopolski, thus bridging the gap between the Baroque era and our own time. The programme also features a contemporary work by Bruno Dozza and a world premiere by Jesús Villa Rojo.
