Based on Dante's Divine Comedy, Laura Ronchetti has created Inferno, a work that depicts Dante as the author and main character with his own vision of life after death. "Many of the characters he encounters on his journey are Florentines from both sides of the civil war he experienced at the end of the 13th century: the Guelphs, who supported the papacy, and the Ghibellines, who supported the Holy Roman Empire. They are placed in different circles of hell according to the severity of their sins, according to Dante's personal opinion," says the composer.
The work, commissioned by Oper Frankfurt, was originally scheduled to premiere in 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the premiere was postponed and took place in June 2021 in a concert version conducted by Tito Ceccherini at the Bockenheimer Depot.
The Teatro dell'Opera di Roma is now presenting a staged version of the opera for the first time, which will be performed in the Italian version commissioned by the opera house and directed by David Hermann. Tito Ceccherini will conduct five performances of the new production with the Neue Vocalsolisten and the orchestra and choir of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma.
