The Teatro Colón is considered the most important opera house and concert hall in Latin America. Alejo Pérez's long-standing artistic connection to the theatre will culminate in 2026 with his appointment as the new principal conductor of the Orquesta Estable del Teatro Colón. In future, he will shape the musical profile of the Teatro Colón with two opera productions and several concerts per year. He will give his inaugural concert in his hometown of Buenos Aires in May with Beethoven's Sixth Symphony and Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique.
"I feel very connected to the Teatro Colón, and it is an honour for me to take on this task together with the Orquesta Estable and to be part of its rich history," says the conductor, who is no stranger to the Teatro Colón: In 2024, he conducted Mahler's 8th Symphony there to great acclaim; in 2015, he celebrated success with Parsifal, and as early as 2001, he conducted Messiaen's Oiseaux exotiques with the Orquesta Estable del Teatro Colón.
The orchestra states: "The appointment of Alejo Pérez is a great asset for the musicians of the orchestra and for the audience of the Teatro Colón. His renowned professional integrity and outstanding career consolidate the legacy of the founders of this famous opera house, who dreamed of positioning Buenos Aires among the world's great cultural capitals. That legacy, which remains alive today, is to be a cradle of great talent, attracting excellence, learning from it and projecting itself onto the world stage."
Over the past six seasons, Alejo Pérez formed the sonic identity of Opera Vlaanderen as its music director, making a strong mark with concerts and numerous new productions, most recently La Clemenza di Tito, Salome, Wozzeck and Parsifal.
