WDR 3 called the recording: "[...] a visually and sonically powerful experience, Prokofiev's ever disturbing, deeply impressive opera is a must – at least for those who dare."
The work, which was never performed in full during the composer's lifetime, indeed challenges performers and audiences alike with its unwieldy energy, unpredictable drama, and tender, eloquent lyricism. As the online magazine Bachtrack wrote of the Emma Dante-directed production back in 2019, "Argentine conductor Alejo Pérez renders this complex score entirely his own. Disturbing ostinato rhythms, representing the demonic side, alternate with the incisively lyrical sections in which Renata expresses her passionate love."
The DVD, released in early 2021 on the Naxos label, was deemed a stellar performance by France’s Crescendo
magazine: "The Rome Opera Orchestra is led here, as are the choruses, with care and precision by Argentine conductor Alejo Pérez. He opens up for the singers a beautiful space for vocal freedom."
