Eliahu Inbal conducts the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne on 6, 7 and 8 April with Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 (soloist is Elisabeth Leonskaja) and Shostakovich's last symphony.

In the year of the 50th anniversary of the death of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975), his great symphonies are the focus of several concerts on Eliahu Inbal's schedule. At the three concerts in the Cologne Philharmonie, it is the 15th symphony that he conducts on the podium of the Gürzenich Orchestra.

Shostakovich's last symphony, which he completed four years before his death in a period of his life already characterised by illness, is regarded as an abysmal retrospective of a composer's life full of highs and lows.

Eliahu Inbal, who celebrates his 90th birthday next year, will be performing Shostakovich's 7th and 8th symphonies in Taiwan at the end of April and in May.
