The Orchestre National d’Auvergne, conducted by Richard Tognetti, will premiere the new work with soloist Ricardo Delgado in Clermont-Ferrand with a second performance in Thiers, before it is again performed at the Fondazione Haydn in Bolzano in the 2026/27 season.
Inspired by Henry Vaughan's poem The Night (1650), Deep Dazzling Darkness reflects the extraordinary tonal possibilities of the double bass, from deep, pulsating resonant sounds to the sparkling ranges of natural overtones.
"Of all the string instruments it is the bass which best embodies this paradoxical possibility for creating a ‘bright darkness’, yet together the string orchestra it can also become the bedrock of extraordinary collective sonorities", says Christian Mason.
Conductor and violinist Richard Tognetti will lead the orchestra in the world premiere, as well as in works by Handel, Vaughan Williams, Haydn and Bach, and will also perform as a soloist.
