At a press conference on 22 September, Aviel Cahn, the designated artistic director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, presented his plans for the musical direction of the opera house following the departure of GMD Sir Donald Runnicles in the summer of 2026.
For the first time, a team of conductors will be appointed to the Deutsche Oper instead of a new general music director. In addition to Titus Engel as Conductor in Residence, the artistic team includes young conductors Maxime Pascal and Michele Spotti as Principal Guest Conductors.
‘I have a long-standing working relationship with Titus Engel,’ said Aviel Cahn. ‘Hardly any other conductor in the German-speaking opera world is as open-minded and innovative in his approach as he is.’
As Conductor in Residence, Titus Engel will conduct a world premiere and a symphonic concert each season, as well as playing a key role in launching innovative projects and collaborations at the Tischlerei and beyond in the urban context of Berlin.
