At its premiere in April 2024, audiences and critics responded enthusiastically to the “powerful music that transcends religious boundaries” (Dagens Nyheter). Jacob Mühlrad’s clarinet concerto SEMA is now available as an album on Warner Classics.
The composer drew inspiration for the work from the choreography of the Sufi dance ritual of the same name. The music embodies "the perpetual motion of the universe, from the macroscopic orbits of planets to the microscopic spin of atoms" (Jacob Mühlrad).
Also included on the album is Alarm of the Soul. Jacob Mühlrad and Olga Neuwirth created this short tape piece to capture the ambiguous feeling of a sound that contains both danger and severity as well as warmth and comfort.
