From 18 June, Titus Engel will be conducting the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in six performances of Frank Zappa’s opera, which is being staged in a new production by Daniel Kramer. The work will be performed at the Bâtiment des Forces Motrices, the former machine hall of the historic hydroelectric power station on the Rhône. Joining the orchestra and the choir of the Grand Théâtre de Genève, as well as an illustrious cast of singers, is the Zurich-based trio Steamboat Switzerland, which has been making music for 30 years at the intersection of new music, improvisation, hardcore, jazz and the avant-garde. Joining them is Mike Keneally on guitar, a musician who shared the stage with Frank Zappa on his final tour in 1988.
200 Motels is a kind of road movie in the guise of an opera, first performed in 1970 by Zubin Mehta and the LA Philharmonic, and released as a film in 1971 featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The opera’s protagonists traverse the USA on a tour from motel to motel – parallels with Frank Zappa’s own touring life with his band, the Mothers of Invention are rendered surreal and distorted, taking on a shimmering, surreal quality.
Titus Engel had already conducted the opera production Einstein on the Beach in 2019, which marked Aviel Cahn’s debut as General Director in Geneva. The collaboration continues under Aviel Cahn’s tenure at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where Titus Engel will take to the podium regularly as Conductor in Residence from next season.
