This year’s festival, organised by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, focuses on creative expression at the piano – and Hyung-ki Joo is making multifaceted contributions to this theme, both on stage and as a speaker.
His recital programme on 3 July at the Victoria Concert Hall is themed ‘Dreams and Nightmares’. It presents Hyung-ki Joo as a performer, composer and improviser who navigates the fluid boundary between memory and imagination, nightmares and dreams. To this end, he blends his own compositions, written for his children, with well-known works, including Ravel’s highly virtuosic yet sombre piece Gaspard de la nuit, excerpts from Debussy’s Children’s Corner in a new arrangement by Gwilym Simcock, Bach’s Partita No. 1 in B flat major and Ravel’s La valse.
On 4 July, the pianist, conductor, communicator and composer will then offer insights and inspiration for developing one’s own creativity during a talk.
