Roland Kluttig with Winterberg CD

The works of the Prague-born composer Hans Winterberg (1901–1991), recorded by Roland Kluttig with the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz and the soloist Jonathan Powell, are a real discovery.

The second symphony by the German-Czech composer – who, as a Jew, was deported to Theresienstadt and moved to Bavaria after his liberation – opens the CD. It also features Winterberg pioneer Jonathan Powell, who passed away at the end of last year, in one of his final, brilliant interpretations of Winterberg’s works: the pianist recorded Hans Winterberg’s Second Piano Concerto with the Rhineland-Palatinate State Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Roland Kluttig, for the recording released on the Capriccio label.

Above the vineyards by Lake Constance, with stunning views of the ‘Swabian Sea’, lies the Glazier House, summer home of Gertrud and Hans Zender. It is here that we meet to talk about the composer’s new work, which is to be premiered just a stone’s throw away from here.
