Concept

The composer Franz Schubert often chose poetic texts for his songs that focus on wandering and farewell, giving voice to experiences of alienation and loneliness from which a longing for a sense of belonging and shelter arises. But how do we hear these works in the 21st century, at a time when millions of people around the world are forced to leave their homes and flee into new uncertainties?

In "SILENT SONGS into the wild", singers, dancers and musicians explore Schubert’s works as a legacy for the here and now, in a staged concert filmed with two cameras. Do these songs belong solely to the early Romantic period, or do they reach beyond the era in which they were written, into other times and other cultural spaces? How and why does a Schubert song move us today? What happens when a singer sets out with it on a journey of discovery towards freedom? This is an individual freedom, yet one still bound up with each performer’s cultural origins and the way those origins have shaped their personality.

Chamber music is elevated to great, existential art by the Kuss Quartet. Radio Bremen Zwei, "Klassikwelt", December 2024

Everything remains different – constant change is the only certainty of our time. This is exactly where the Kuss Quartet comes in: with courage and a passion for discovery, it initiates new programs and formats, transforming contemporary themes into art. The quartet draws its strength equally from a spirit of experimentation and a devotion to the classical repertoire from Haydn to Schubert. In doing so, it captivates both traditional and innovation-loving audiences, opening ears to the unknown. The Kuss Quartet thus stands for both: innovation and tradition – and both in excellence.

“…Nico and the Navigators succeed in powerfully staging the experience of foreignness and the search for home through a multilayered performance of Schubert’s songs… creating a sonic universe that feels modern, idiosyncratic and yet sensitive… At the end comes the finale of Schubert’s String Quartet ‘Death and the Maiden’, so crystal clear, energetic and compelling that the audience is reluctant to leave for a long time…”
