At the podium of the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, Johannes Klumpp conducts an unconventional version of Mozart’s opera. MiR.LAB of the Musiktheater im Revier, which explores new forms of musical theatre at the intersection of participation, art and digital technology, brings grand opera and video game concepts together.
The production promises a fairy-tale-like and dystopian open-world simulation set against a stage design featuring interactive screens, inspired by historical paintings and Baroque theatre sets. The opera’s fundamental questions remain, however – how can one find one’s own moral compass in a complex world dominated by power games and the spread of misinformation?
Johannes Klumpp feels a close connection to Mozart’s work; among other things, his performances of Figaro at the Tyrolean State Theatre in Innsbruck received great praise, and he has also conducted Mozart’s The Magic Flute and Così fan tutte on numerous occasions. His acclaimed recordings of the symphonies and concertos of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Folkwang Chamber Orchestra Essen, are part of a complete recording project due to be finalised in the coming years.
