Comment of the composer on the work
Ramifications (1968–69) is a quarter-tone piece for twelve solo strings. Six of the instruments are tuned a quarter-tone lower than the other six. The resulting web-like 24-note pitch field abounds in irregular beats produced by interference between the two differently tuned groups of instruments.
