Steven Sloane conducted the German premiere of David Lang's opera Prisoner of the State in Bochum on May 17. After a tour to Rotterdam and Bruges, he will now conduct the work in Malmö on June 3 and 4.
From 1994 to 2021 Steven Sloane was General Music Director of the Bochum Symphony Orchestra, which advanced to become one of Germany's leading orchestras under his leadership. His achievements also included the realisation of the orchestra's own concert hall, the Anneliese Brost Musikforum Ruhr.
Now the conductor returned to the house with an opera production. After the performance in Bochum, David Lang's Prisoner of the State was performed with the Bochumer Symphoniker at de Doelen Rotterdam (20 May) and Concertgebouw Bruges (23 May).
In Malmö, he will conduct the work, a co-production of the New York Philharmonic, Barbican Centre London, Concertgebouw Brugge, de Doeelen Rotterdam, Malmö Opera and Auditorio de Barcelona, also on 3 and 4 June with the Malmö Operaorkester.
David Lang created his own version of Fidelio with Prisoner of the State: without quoting Beethoven's music, he used various libretto versions of the opera to build his own textual framework.
