The Hamburg Gänsemarkt Opera only existed until 1738? Yes and no, because now it is coming back to life, and tenor Simon Bode is with us as Melito in the production Patient Socrates.

The historic opera house on Gänsemarkt will unfortunately not exist as a physical opera house for Hamburg in the future. However, this ambitious project now takes up the great tradition associated with the house, which was after all the first opera house open to the public in the German-speaking region from 1678 to 1738 - and the second such opera house in the world. Names such as Graupner, Reincken, Mattheson, Telemann, and Handel are closely associated with the Gänsemarktoper.
