Under the baton of Brad Lubman, the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne will perform Lukas Ligeti's Suite for Burkina Electric and Symphony Orchestra on 4 June as part of the Oluzayo Festival, curated by the composer.
Lukas Ligeti himself can be heard on percussion and electronics when his ensemble Burkina Electric joins forces with the Gürzenich Orchestra to perform the suite in the Sartory Halls.
Burkina Electric combines West African musical tradition with avant-garde concepts and Afro-pop, electronics and modern dance. The suite opens up spaces for merging with the orchestra playing classical instruments. The programme is complemented by an early South African orchestral piece by the composer Michael Mosoeu Moerane from Lesotho.
Lukas Ligeti is co-curator of the Oluzayo Festival, which takes place as part of the African Futures conference in Cologne.
