Florentina Holzinger's production Sancta now takes Hindemith's opera as its starting point and supplements the work with parts of the Catholic mass, spoken texts and performative elements. Caroline Melzer sings the title role in performances until 3 November in the production, which previously led to enthusiastic reactions and controversial debates in Schwerin and Vienna.
For the Stuttgart State Opera, Sancta is part of a series of productions that embark on a search for spirituality, following Bach's St John Passion and Messiaen's Saint François d'Assise in recent seasons.
On 22 September, Caroline Melzer can be seen in an introductory matinee to the opera, accompanied on the piano by Marco Rizzello; in a panel discussion, the production team led by Florentina Holzinger and conductor Marit Strindlund will provide insights into the scenic and musical conception of the production.
